Fire Officers at Agona Swedru
National Fire Service (NFS) have stated that preliminary
investigations into Saturday’s fire incident at the Agona Swedru
branch of the Melcom shopping centre
revealed that an electrical fault caused the fire.
The Agona Swedru branch of Melcom Shopping
Centre last Saturday was gutted by fire with goods worth
millions of Ghana Cedis which took combined
efforts of the Kasoa, Winneba and Swedru Fire stations to
bring it under control.
According to the Swedru Municipal Divisional Fire Officer Grade 1,
Ebenezer Mensah, investigations have commenced into the disaster to
establish the evidence of the electrical fault.
Speaking on Citi Fm on Monday, Mr. Mensah stated that the Manager
of the Shopping Center has been call
upon to assist with the investigations.
“We are suspecting that there are some electrical gadgets that were
left on in the room because when you watch the whole apartment, on
one side of the wall, the beams and the pillars have cracked
seriously and every item was burnt” he noted.
He however added that an interview conducted with one of the
workers so far exposed that the fire certificate for the shop had
expired.
“it’s supposed to last for 12 months
then you just come to renew it and then we will go there again to
inspect if all gadgets are still intact…so they also have some answers to give but for
now I can’t give you the exact cause” he intimated.
NPP to prove alleged electoral fraud later today
Accra - 10.12.2012 ::::: The
New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Director, Nana Akomea, has
told Joy News the party will release figures from over 20
constituencies where there were major discrepancies between results
from the polling stations and those declared at the collation

He said the party, so far,
has enough evidence to prove there was voter fraud in at least 20
constituencies, adding that the results were tampered with before

All political leaders must respect the voice of the people – Mahama
Ghana’s President-elect John
Dramani Mahama has asked all political leaders in the country to
respect the verdict of the people.
Mr. Mahama was delivering his
victory speech after the Chairman of the Electoral Commission of
Ghana, Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, declared him the winner of Friday’s
poll.
He received 50.70% of the total
votes cast to beat his main contender, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo
of the opposition New Patriotic Party, who obtained 47.74% of the
votes.
The opposition party alleged
fraud, insisting that ballot counts in some electoral centres were doctored.
But the EC asked the NPP to take
its case to court.
Mr. Mahama expressed his gratitude to the people of
Ghana for the confidence reposed in him.
Multimedia's Elections
Headquarters projected Sunday morning that the incumbent president
would win the poll.
The EC's results virtually
confirmed the projected results of Joy FM.
There wild celebrations took
place on major streets and in pubs
across the country.
President Mahama, a northern
Christian, ascended to the presidency under extraordinary
circumstances: he was sworn in as president following the death of
President John Atta Mills in July 2012 in accordance with Ghana's
constitution.
His governing National
Democratic Congress (NDC) quickly proclaimed him its presidential
candidate with the election only months away.
In order not alienate the people
of the home region of his predecessor and political mentor Atta
Mills, the politically unpredictable Central Region, Mr.
Mahama appointed then-Governor of
the Bank of Ghana, Mr. Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, as his Vice
President.
The President told voters his
party deserved a second term because since 1992, every President
has won a second term bid. He said that it was only fair that the
NDC was given a second term to complete its Better Ghana project
initiated under the late president.
The electorate must have bought
his message, giving his party a second bid in closely contested
elections.
It remains to be seen whether
Mr. Mahama can fulfill the promises
he made to the electorate.

Motorists cautioned against indiscipline during
Christmas
Source: ETV-Ghana / 24.12.2012
Globally, individuals and families are looking forward to Christmas
and the beginning of a New Year. To underscore the season’s
importance, planning for trips and other celebrations take
prominence.
The season also records when people travel the most, as friends and
members of families, convene at their villages or other meeting
points to celebrate.
In the rush to transport commuters during such festive occasions,
motorists ignore road regulations, often resulting in
accidents.
During festive seasons such as Christmas and New Year, most
commuters in Ghana travel to various parts of the country by
road.
As such, most of the road networks are usually busy during such
period, raising the risk of accidents. The situation is made worse
by the poor understanding and awareness of road signs, poor driving
habits, ill-maintained vehicles and the quest of motorists
especially commercial vehicles to make money, hence engaging in
over speeding.
Drink driving has also been identified by the National Road Safety
Commission, as one of the leading causes of road traffic accidents
during festive seasons especially Christmas.
Data from the National Road Safety Commission indicates that as of
the end of November this year, more than 13,500 crashes had been
recorded.
The commission urged drivers, to make their trips safely by not
mixing driving and drinking, over speeding and impatience with
other drivers.
Drivers are to also service their vehicles before embarking on
trips.
